Mark, let's first get to the travel news, and then we will get to the hot travel deal of the week, which you just printed off. Let's start with the law, shall we?

Delta And Aeromexico Partnership Returns

Let's go. An appeals court has overturned a Department of Transportation order to dissolve Delta Aero Mexico venture. Now, last time we talked about they were ordered to separate, I guess is the right word. And then all of a sudden the appeals court is saying, nah, you're good.

What are the details? They were ordered to dissolve their partnership by the end of January, 2027. So the fact that the appeals court overturned this is good. It adds more options to Mexico. Delta may have a flight to Mexico City, but then from there you can connect to all sorts of other airports within Mexico and have it almost act like you're on one airline, even though you're flying two different airlines. I think this is a good thing for travelers. One reason why the Department of Transportation did this is because the past president of Mexico had kind of a pet project. They built another airport in Mexico City and they were trying to divert traffic to that. And so they reduced the number of hourly flights at the main airport. They made all cargo go to this new airport, and there's what's called an open skies agreement where basically they're not supposed to restrict things like this. So the DOT kind of did this to punish Mexico for having that. There's a similar exemption already carved out for a few other places around the world. So the appeals court said it doesn't warrant this because you've already made exceptions to other destinations around the world that have similar things.

United Tests Gate Food Delivery

I do like this next story, Mark, that uh United Airlines is testing a new app feature to deliver food straight to passenger's gates.

Love this idea. This is kind of like DoorDash within an airport. So United through their app, they're testing this out in just a few gates at the Newark International Airport right now, mainly on international long-haul flights, but there's a few domestic uh flights where they're testing this. But you can order food through the app that will be delivered to the gate before you depart. I really like this, especially if you're on a tight connection and you don't have time to stop for food when you're on your flight before. You can just order a sandwich or a salad, drinks, whatever, and it'll be there ready for you to pick up when you get to the gate.

TSA GateSide Brings Back Gate Visits

TSA now lets you go through airport security without a flight ticket at 13 airports. So this is pre-September 11th, 2001.

Not quite going back to that, because you still have to apply for it and get approval. It's a program called GateSide by TSA PreCheck. What it does is two or three days before you want to go, as long as you're a pre-check member, so you have pre-check through either global entry or just the regular pre-check, you can apply, you'll get an approval, and then you can go with them through security to send someone off, or you can meet someone at their gate, or if you want. And this is something I probably would take advantage of because I used to do this all the time. If you want to just go eat at the airport, I would do that. I just like being at airports. I'm strange, and so I you know, you could just go hang out at the airport if you wanted.

I don't think that's strange at all because there's a certain energy at the airport that's just awesome. Yeah. Just the hustle and bustle, and maybe we could do the show from there.

Yeah, that would be great. Yeah, and most of our listeners here in Salt Lake. Salt Lake is one of those 13 airports that's on there. Columbus, Dallas, Fort Worth, Detroit, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Little Rock. That seems a little interesting based on the other ones. Um Phoenix. Phoenix, I guess. Oklahoma City, Omaha, Nebraska, San Diego, and another one, Wichita, Kansas, or those are the 13 airports that are slated for this program. Then it'll probably roll out to more and more airports. I think it's good. I kind of miss the days when you could go meet someone at the gate or take someone to the gate, or in my case, just go to the gate. Now, I I wish I could get into the Sky Club without a ticket because I would go just hang out at the Sky Club if I can. But you have to have a valid ticket to go into the Sky Club.

Airlines is going to launch their first ever lounges in four US cities. What four cities? Let's start there, and then what kind of amenities are they going to offer?

The four airports are Austin Airport, Baltimore, Washington Airport, Honolulu Airport, and Nashville Airport. I do expect another 11 lounges to come online shortly, but those will be the first four. I like this, especially the Honolulu one. Honolulu, because the flights are overnight flights coming back. So you have to check out of your hotel early. I sometimes like to just go wait at the lounge at the airport.

So it'll be interesting to see what these lounges are like because Southwest has kind of been transforming itself from a low-cost carrier to more of a mainline carrier with all their changes with assigned seating and how they handle bags. But on the longer flights, a lounge is always a nice amenity to have. They haven't really announced what the cost is, how you'll be able to get into the lounges. I assume there will be a credit card component to that. Like Delta has with some of their cars that you can get into the lounge, but it will be interesting to see how that goes. I'm excited for this for Southwest.

Lori's question was she wants to go down into Mexico and experience Day of the Dead, Dia de los Muertos.

This is, I think, one of the most unique times to visit Mexico. Let's first start off with the deal. And this encompasses all of Mexico. And then we'll talk a little bit about Day of the Dead and where the best places are to experience that. So right now in Mexico, there's some really good hotel promotions going on. And then you can bundle those, make a complete vacation package, including airfare, and get them for even a little bit lower. Since our topic is the Day of the Dead festivities, I think Puerto Vallarta is the best place to go. But we'll get to that a little bit later. And here are just some of the hotel promotions that are out there in Mexico. At the Sheraton Bucanvilas Resort, which is in Puerto Vallarta, you can save up to $300 for stays of three nights or longer. At Hilton All Inclusive Resorts, up to $700 off a package. At Ryu Hotels and Resorts, up to 70% off. Whoa. So the deals just keep getting better. Yeah. And then at the Hyatt Ziva all-inclusive resorts, up to 25% off. And actually, one of my favorite hotels in Puerto Vallarta is the Hyatt Ziva Puerto Vallarta, has probably the best beach and probably one of the best restaurant locations of anywhere in Mexico that I've visited. And then the Hyatt Inclusive collection. So that'd be like Secrets and Dreams. You can save up to $600 of instant savings. And so all of those are booked by September 30th. When you bundle that with airfare, there's some extra airfare savings along with that as well. Any Hyatt Ziva I've stayed at has been amazing. And actually any Hyatt Inclusive resort, so even Secrets and Dreams have all been very good. You can't go wrong with any of those properties. Yeah. Awesome. Back to Lori's question about where to experience Day of the Dead. A lot of people associate this with Mexico's version of Halloween, and it's really not that. It's a celebration of remembrance when families come together to honor loved ones who have passed away. The main dates that it's observed is November 1st and November 2nd.

Why two days? The first day, November 1st, remembers I can't remember children or children.

Oh, it is deceased children, and then November 2nd honors deceased adults. They often have the decorations up a week or so or even longer before. One thing about this not to miss is Pan de Morto, which is bread of the dead. It's a traditional sweet bread that is made just during this time of Day of the Dead. And it's typically available from late October through November 2nd in most Mexican destinations. It's one of my favorite things about that time.

It's really good. And you know, I've been lucky enough. I've been in Mexico twice during Day of the Dead, and the celebrations are amazing. The decorations, the parades. I think this is something that should be on someone's bucket list, especially if you're interested in cultural immersion. A lot of people think of Mexico, I'm just gonna go to the beach, I'm gonna do that. But this really gets you a cultural aspect of Mexico. Speaking of the cultural part of that, Oaxaca is probably the best place to get immersed into these experiences. They have cemetery traditions, all the small villages have celebrations, and it's highly recommended that you visit some of these smaller villages, and then they have nighttime processions and all of these, so parades, different things like that. Just you know, a very colorful celebration of life.

What about Mexico City? Do they have any uh big celebrations there?

Mark Faldmo 13:34

Yeah, Mexico City, it's a little bit more theatrical, but they have a huge Day of the Dead parade. I've not experienced that, I've seen a few things, um, but it's a huge parade. And then if you're in the Cancun area, Excarette, which is a cultural park, water park in the area, they do put on a festival of life and death during that time. For the average traveler, I'd recommend Porta Vallarta to experience Day of the Dead. The downtown area and the Malecon, which is the walkway along the beach, just has the you know giant catarinas, which are the 15, 20 foot kind of statue type things, like paper mache type statues, really interesting, flowers, live music, cultural performances, and Puerto Vallarta also does have a parade. But one thing that I like about Porto Vallarta is you can still have a traditional beach destination while still experiencing Day of the Dead.

For Patrick, that sounds amazing. Kind of both.

Mark Faldmo 14:36

It is. Yeah, so you kind of get both. If I were to choose hotels down there, there are two that I would choose. One is the Villa Premier, which is a boutique adults-only hotel, and the other one is a Buenaventura Grande, which is a family-friendly, all-inclusive. Villa Premier, you can either buy an all-inclusive package or get it without meals. But what I like is both of these are beachfront and they're close enough to downtown that you can walk and visit the festivities. It's less than a five-minute walk to the start of the Molacon from there. Where most of the other resort type hotels are much further away. You probably have to take a taxi or a 20 to 30 minute walk or more. And so these hotels are perfect for I think for Porto Vallta in general, but also for Day of the Dead because they're so close and you can get that resort fill, but be close enough to experience everything.

Club Med Expands With Thailand Resort

What do we know about this? Club Med has all-inclusive resorts all around the world, and ClubMed is also the pioneer of the all-inclusive concept. They were kind of the first to do that on a large scale. To get an all-inclusive in a place like Thailand and to the quality that Club Med is, is really a good thing. So this resort will kind of be a companion resort to the Club Med Phuket, which Club Med has had for over 40 years. And this is more of a luxury style. They kind of have two styles of resorts, and so this one is going to be their luxury, and they call it exclusive collection. That gives another really good option for an all-inclusive in Thailand. Club Med has already recently broke ground on a new Club Med in St. Croix. One thing that I like about Club Med is they're all inclusive all around the world. And so they have resorts in the Caribbean and Mexico, which are the ones we often talk about most, but they also have resorts in Canada. Club Med has kind of gone and they have lots of ski type resorts in Canada. They also have the Alps, Swiss and Italian Alps, that they have all-inclusive resorts in, and then throughout Europe and the Mediterranean.

Sailed out of Miami, which by the way, if you've never been on a cruise, it's a great ship. And also going to Bimini and uh I forgot where else we went. We spent the entire month down in the Caribbean.

That was so much fun. It really was. Coming up in this segment, we're gonna get to the cruise news and we're also gonna get to the cruise deal of the week. But let's first start with Holland America Have It All Early Booking Bus. Let's explain what Have It All is.

They have an early booking bonus that gives you some enhancements. So typically, what have it all is, is it's an add-on you buy on top of your uh regular cruise fare, which gives you up to a $300 short excursion credit, gives you a basic beverage package, gives you specialty dining, it gives you basic Wi-Fi. Book by September 30th. You'll still get that short excursion credit of up to $300 per guest. You'll be upgraded to the Elite beverage package, you'll still get the specialty dining, you'll be upgraded to premium Wi-Fi package so you can stream, and then two perks that are not normally included: free prepaid gratuities, which is a value of for a seven-day cruise, about $150 a person. And then they also have a best price guarantee. This one's a little bit strange because it's restricted. So it's if you find a better price within 72 hours of booking, they'll match the lower price, which I don't know if that's much of a perk, but it is a perk they're throwing on here. And then if you're booking an Alaska cruise tour, now this is very limited, so it's a limited time based on a first come, first serve basis. If you book a new Alaska cruise tour for 2027 or beyond, you'll get a meal plan tour on the land section of your tour, which normally meals are not included in that. That's a good perk. That's a really good perk.

Let's just do a quick summary of what they're doing in Alaska in the 2028 season.

These just opened up. When they open up a destination, that's the time you should book it. You can always put a deposit down. If you

New Longer Alaska Cruises For 2028

find a better price, you can cancel and rebook. There's lots of ways you can do that, but it's always best to put a deposit down right when the destination comes out. So in 2028, Holland America is offering cruises ranging from seven to 18 days. The bigger part of this is their longer voyages. They typically have not done these longer voyages. They're also going to some unusual ports and some new scenic cruising options that they have not done before. Let's start with the 11 day. Starts in San Diego and it's San Diego to Vancouver, but it visits the typical ports, Juno, Ketchikan, but then it visits some other ports that aren't as typical. Rangell, Alaska, Calawak, and Prince Rupert. And then it visits Glacier Bay for its scenic cruising. I prefer Calwak and Rangel because they're not the typical ports that most Alaska cruises go to. This particular itinerary is actually a repositioning cruise. So it goes April 29th, 2028.

What about their 14-day, what they're calling the Great Alaska Explorer? But this one goes out of Seattle, I think.

Yeah, so this one is round trip Seattle and operates throughout the year. And the thing that I like about this one is it's a much deeper Alaska itinerary. Instead of stopping at the primary Southeast Alaska cruise ports, it goes to Anchorage, Kodiak, Valdez, in addition to some of those southeast Alaska ports like Juneau and Ketchikan. On this one, you also get two glacier days. You get Hubbard Glacier and Endicot Arm. Oh, where you Dawes Glacier. So, you know, 14 days round trip Seattle with some very unique ports. Kodiak and Valdez are two ports that I really want to visit that I've not had the opportunity. And so I might have to book this one just to experience those.

If you're going to Alaska, seven days just seems so short. Truly. We did a seven-day round trip Seattle. It was over so fast. It's like, man, I really want another week. So 11-day is good, 14-day is better. Do they have a 16 or an 18-day?

Mark Faldmo 25:26

Yeah, there's two more itineraries we can go over. One is 18-day, and it's called Great Bear Rainforest and Alaska Explorer. This is another one I'd highly recommend because it covers a little bit more of British Columbia, which is the Great Bear Rainforest. And this one sells round trip Vancouver. It includes port called Bella Bella, then Homer, Kodiak, Anchorage, Valdez, Glacier Bay, and something that's new that no other cruise line has ever sailed to is Scenic Cruising, which is called Newtka Sound, which a remote waterway, which is on the west coast of Vancouver Island. Usually you just sail past Vancouver Island, but this one you're actually gonna spend a little bit more time on Vancouver Island.

Also, we talked about a 16-day, and that's just a little bit shorter version of this one, but it is a new itinerary for just 2028. Goes to Prince Rupert, Kodiak, Anchorage, Valdez, Hubbard Glacier, and then the Great Bear Rainforest. So this one has a little bit more scenic cruising than other itineraries. Goes to the Johnstone Strait, Greenville Channel, and Prince Royal Channel. So you get a lot of that wild coastal wilderness that you don't get on other cruises. I'm just gonna say yes to all of it. Yes. Yeah. And especially as you say, you know, most of the cruises I've done are seven days. Seven days just isn't enough in Alaska.

If that's the only time you have, go. But Alaska is genuinely special.

It is, yeah. And especially these longer 2028 itineraries. Book them now before they're gone. I think these will be very popular.

going to replace Princess Keys, which is Princess's Private Island, with Relax Away and Half Moon K, which is Carnival and Hall America's Island. I'm not sure why they're doing this, and they haven't said anything. You know, I wonder if it's for some renovations. There's been no news. Both of those that they're replacing it with Half Moon K, which I think you visited. Yeah. And then Relax Away have both undergone major improvements. So maybe they're just gonna switch and have all of the carnival family of brands stop at those two spots and they might sell off Princess Key.

Margarita Villa Sea CEO is teasing a 2027 Galveston departure point, and of course, their new ship, which is going to be called Beachcomber. So they now have Margaritavilla Sea Paradise, which was eh, it was all right. Did need some work. And then they had the Islander, which goes out of Tampa, and now they're talking about Beachcomber potentially going out of Galveston.

It's becoming a major cruise hub. You can reach some really interesting Caribbean destinations from Galveston. So I think that'd be a good move on their part.

Especially with this new ship. They've got to figure out they'll have three ships. The new ship they've really put a lot into. Marguerite Ville at Sea has formed a major partnership with Zach Brown band and Zach Brown. He helped design the live music venue on the beach comer. The venue's name is going to be called The Same Boat, which is one of his songs. Yeah. And you know, Zach Brown also had a long-standing relationship with Jimmy Buffett. So there's kind of a natural correlation there. And one interesting thing that they're doing with the three ships is on January 28th, they're going to bring all three ships together. And Zach Brown is going to put on a concert just for those that are on those three ships in Nassau, Bahamas. So you talked about the paradise just a minute ago when we were on there. It was so so. Really good food. It was good food. The ship itself was so so. It has gone through a renovation, so it'd be interesting to see that. But one thing on the new beach comer is they're gonna have the largest by square footage cheeseburger and paradise location. So there we go. Which was really good on the paradise when we were there. But what about the annual pass? They started this in 2026, but it starts at $8.99 per guest for unlimited sailings within a 30-day period. Yeah, that's interchangeable by ship. So you could take a cruise on all three ships, you could do back-to-back cruises on different ships, and they do some different itineraries. I think the annual pass thing is a great option for people, especially if you like to cruise. And if you could take 30 days off and just cruise, well, you've done that. Yes, I have. So, and you can take them saying out of Tampa, Palm Beach, or Miami, or if Galvison comes on, you can use the annual pass for that.

Travel Insurance Tips Beyond Credit Cards

They might cover trip cancellation or lost luggage, but they provide little or no emergency medical coverage. Sometimes it has to be purchased on that specific card. So if you purchase things through different cards, they won't cover it. So, you know, you really have to know. And my recommendation is to always buy a standalone travel insurance policy from a company. I particularly use Travel X, but a standalone policy that is built around the specific risks and needs associated with traveling. There are kind of five questions you should ask if you think your credit card insurance covers you. The five questions are does it cover emergency medical expenses? You know, some people confuse travel assistance with medical insurance. It's not the same. Not even close. Their assistance might mean they help you find a doctor or a hospital, but then you have to pay for that.

So, you know, even though they say medical travel assistance, it might just be helping you find a doctor. But you'll get stuck with the bill. You'll get stuck with the bill. Do I have to pay for this trip with this card? In most cases, the answer is yes. Some people have a card just for the benefits, but they might be putting things on other cards. So you have to make sure you're using the card properly in order to get the coverage. And then the other big thing is is there a deductible? A lot of the credit cards are secondary insurance. So you have to have a primary insurance to cover the costs, and then they'll cover whatever is not covered by your primary insurance. And that's a big thing that I've found. And you know, I would only go with primary coverage, especially if you're traveling overseas. And then the fourth question is does this cover medical evacuation? Most credit card insurances do not cover medical evacuation. And that can be very expensive. And then the last thing is, is there an actual dollar amount limit? Don't settle for yes, that's covered. Ask how much is covered. If you look at a thing separately like trip cancellation, trip interruption, medical evacuation, you'll find in most cases that what credit card cover is pretty low compared to what a typical travel insurance policy would cover.
