Kauai Hurricane Advice And Waivers

This was a big story. I don't know if you saw some of the footage on the news, but um Hawaii tourism officials are asking visitors who are coming to Hawaii to postpone trips to Kauai specifically after Hurricane Lowell damaged resorts, roads, utilities, more chickens. That's my take. Yeah.

They blew the chickens around. That's how the chickens got there. Back in the 90s, a hurricane came through, and they've had wild chickens ever since. And they are still there, as you know. They are still there. Yeah. First an update. As of early this week, power was restored to about 75% of the highland. Oh, good. Water systems are restored. Continuing road reconstruction and recovery work is still going on. So in the near term, Kawaii is asking visitors to reschedule or shift their dates to a later time period or to another Hawaiian island. Oh, okay. Don't cancel. A story like this, this is where a good travel advisor comes into play. When there's a big weather event like this, if you booked on your own, you can wait hours to talk to let's take Delta Airlines, for instance. So as travel advisors, we get waiver codes that just let us rebook.

And so, like we had some clients on Kauai that were going, they were actually supposed to leave yesterday. So with these waiver codes, it took us about 15 minutes of work. We got them rescheduled to go in November, where if you did it on your own and you had to work with the airline, the hotel, all of that, they probably still could be on hold trying to make that change right now.

Europe Costs Rise And Google Tools

Cities across England could soon start charging visitors an overnight tourism tax. Oh boy.

Usually that tourism tax is a national tax. And so what they're saying is now individual municipalities can start charging a tourism tax. You know, sometimes there's been city taxes and all of that, but this is now a visitor's tax. What this means is hotels could become more expensive, the cost could vary from city to city, because one city might have a tax, one city might not have a tax, they might be at different rates. How they're pitching it is travelers could potentially see something in return, which I don't think this is going to happen. This is just how government pitches things that there will be less tourists, and so they'll have a better vacation.

That is a terrible idea. Let's just pillage the people who want to come visit us.

They say this will help with roads and tourism infrastructure. I think we've talked about in the this in the past, Alaska at one point charged a tax on cruise visitors, and they said all that money was gonna go to help develop cruise infrastructure, new cruise ports, new tours, tourism infrastructure. And in the end, the government just took it and spent it elsewhere. They didn't develop any tourist infrastructure like they said they were going to. So it makes me skeptical when they say this tax will help build tourist infrastructure because it never goes towards that.

Google has stripped several flight and hotel search features from European results. So we'll continue on with the Europe news here. In order to comply with the European Union competition rules, travelers can no longer access some live prices, date filters, and descriptive tags directly. So here we go.

This is part of the EU's Digital Markets Act, and it was actually specifically designed to prevent Google from favoring its own products. This is more than a cross just travel, but we'll relate we'll relate it to travel here. There are some good tools in Google, like their flight calendar, different things like that. So they've removed that from anything in Europe. The EU says this will help competition. It just means that other search engines or other companies that are far behind what Google is doing will now be on an equal plane field. I don't think it's a good idea. You know, I I don't book anything through Google, but I use a lot of those tools sometimes, especially if I'm trying to find what a good day to fly on is. Those Google tools are good, but you won't be able to use those if you're searching for destinations inside Europe.

Hyatt Switches From American To Delta

But Hyatt is in with Delta, but American Airlines is out. What does that mean?

Hyatt has had a long-standing relationship with American Advantage program where you had crossover benefits. Now Hyatt is Delta's partner. That's gonna start sometime next year. I believe February 28th is the date. So if you're an American Advantage member that has been earning points on Hyatt Hotels or using the cross benefits, that will end sometime first quarter of next year. For those of us that are Delta Sky Miles members, that means we'll get to earn points on Hyatt's days with how they're linking the programs.

Morocco Tour Savings And Top Cities

So Seth called Mark and says, I want to go to Morocco. I want to know what the best way is to see Morocco and what places should I prioritize to see.

Morocco is a great destination to visit. A few weeks ago, we mentioned I'm taking that celestial cruise that stops in Morocco, which I'm excited for. So let's start with the travel deal. I would definitely recommend seeing Morocco on an escorted tour. I think this is the best way to maximize seeing the country. I recommend Globus Family. So either Globus Tours or Cosmos Tours have some really good tours. Depending on the departure date, Globus has a deal up to $1,200 per reservation on select tours, and Cosmos has a save up to $600 on select tours. And that's worldwide, but they are applied to these Morocco tours as well.

What destinations would you prioritize for Morocco?

There's four that I'd prioritize. One is Marrakech. It's probably the best known introduction to Morocco. You can explore the Souks, which are the market areas. There's lots of palaces, gardens. It's also a great place to experience Moroccan food, which is great. The next place is Fez. Oh, you like Fez. And this is a cultural and historic highlight. UNESCO has it an area. It's called Fez El Bali Medina. I'm having a hard time pronouncing that. Fez El Bali Medina, which is a maze of narrow streets, markets, and workshops in the historic city center. So Fez is one of the places where Morocco feels most distinctly different from Europe and North America. So it's an authentic place to visit. The next is Erfud, which is a gateway to the Sahara Desert. So it's located in the southeast of Morocco, right on the edge of the Saharan Desert. And then Rabat, which is the capital, which is worth including for its history, architecture, and Kazbah, which is generally calmer than Marrakesh and Fez, but still a great place to visit.

I'll be here all week. As I was making this, I started singing that song. So some people might say, Well, why didn't you put Casablanca on that list? I probably would put it on that list, but I'd prioritize those other four ahead of Casablanca. One thing that I like to do in Casablanca is they have a movie tour. Oh yeah. All of the movies that were filmed there. So Casablanca is another one I would add to that, but Marrakesh, Fez, Air Fiod, Air Faud, and Rabat are the four that I'd prioritize.

When are you going to Morocco? Is that next year? Is that April? I'm going in in December. Oh, December. Oh, wait. This December. This December. Oh okay. So we're about 90 days out basically. Correct.

Let's talk about some of the highlights of Morocco tours from Cosmos.

I've got tours with both Cosmos and Globus. I think the one that interests me the most is a Cosmos tour, which starts and ends in Casablanca, goes to Rabat, then spends two nights in Fez, two nights in Air Feud, uh, which is the gateway to the Sahara, two nights in Marrakesh. That tour starts at $13.99 per person. That's it? Yeah, four. I guess you have to get airfare. Plus airfare. Oh, yeah, okay.

That's a 10-day tour. Okay. Starting at $13.99, depending on the date that you decide to go. And then Globus has a tour. This one is an escape tour. So those are the off-season tours that Globus offers. It's a little bit shorter. It's a seven-day tour. Starts at $11.59 per person. And since it's shorter, it's two nights in Casablanca, two nights in Fez, two nights in Marrakesh with stops in Rabat. A little bit shorter, but you do get a pretty good overview of Morocco. And then Globus also has another, they have a combo tour. This is one that I really like. It's a 17-day tour. Spain, Portugal, and Morocco. So you basically start in Madrid and then go down to southern Spain. Then you take a ferry across to Tangier, then do Fez, Marrakech, Robot in Morocco,

I am Patrick Wiscombe, The Vacation Nerd, alongside my vacation nerd friend, owner of BluePlanetVacations.com, Mark Faldmo. This is the Just Cruising segment, the segment of the show that is only about cruise news and cruise deals. And to all those boarding the show right now, let me just simply say, Ahoy, Matees. Ahoy. Mark, I know we've got uh two cruise deals of the week coming up, but let's first start with the cruise news. But I wanted to start with this first story that in my mind, I know that the cruise industry is absolutely enormous, and it's actually becoming even more popular than I had in my head. So if you've ever wondered if cruising is popular, here's your answer. The global cruise ship order book now stands at 84 additional ships. That's on top of all of the other ships already out, worth roughly $88.8 billion, which represents nearly 230,000 additional berths scheduled through 2039. That's 13 years worth of cruise ship building. If there's an industry that's pretty safe right now, probably say the cruise industry.

Yeah. These new ships come on. Some of the larger cruise lines take older ships out of their fleet, but they don't go away. We talked just a little bit ago about celestial cruise. We've talked about Margaritaville. So those cruise lines take these older ships, refurbish them into a new product, and they grow as well. It's amazing how fast the cruise line industry is growing. Ships might move from one company to another, but with 84 new ships coming on in the next is that 15 years, that's 13 years. 13 years. Yeah. You know, that's pretty amazing. Looking at that 84 ships, that's about a billion dollars to ship.

New Cruise Concepts And New Ships

is a luxury brand. Oceana is kind of premium luxury. Oh, okay, okay. Not quite full luxury, but very good cruise line.

It doesn't hurt my feelings to step on board those ships. No. Oceana Cruises has announced what it calls the industry's first completely can I have your attention, please? Gluten-free ocean cruise. The 12-night 2028 sailing will visit England, Ireland, and Scotland aboard the Oceana Vista. That's the name of the ship. So that's a first. I've seen gluten-free sections, but not an entire gluten-free cruise.

It will work. I know those with food sensitivities and food allergies always have an issue with that. Even in some of those gluten-free sections, you're always wondering was there any cross-contamination? So they're gonna completely make the ship gluten-free, which will be good.

Kudos to Oceana for addressing that. I know that there are some people who have some real issues, not sensitivities, but I'm talking real issues, digestive issues. So uh hats off to you. Carnival Cruise Line unveiled major features for Carnival Tropical, their new ship, the fifth and final Excel class ship set to sail from Galveston starting in April of 2028. They are saying to expect a six-slide Waterworks Ultra, family focused sensation point, new restaurants, expanded entertainment when the ship debuts in April of 2028.

This is a multi-deck family entertainment zone. One thing about cruise ships is pool deck kind of dies down in the evening, but this is designed to stay active from daytime into the evening. So it's much more than your typical pool deck on a cruise ship. Bring the aloe vera. Yes.

The Carnival Waterworks Ultra, which is the water park on board, it's significantly expanding to six water slides and two splash pads. And then it also has two family-themed raft rides. So the Sun Soaker and Turning Tides. And then they're also, because of these new features, planning to extend the water park hours into the evening. They usually close at 5 or 6 p.m. But just like the Sensation Point, this is going to go into the evening. So you can have your water activities all evening long. They have three new restaurants that'll be on this one. I'm excited for Azukaleli, which will be Hawaiian Asian themed cuisine, Fedicini, which will be Greek and Italian, and then Emerill's Coastal Seafood, which will be Emeril Legassi's take-on seafood from the Southern Gulf Coast area.

Explora Journeys. This is an MSC luxury cruise ship, Explorer Journeys. Redeployed the Explora 1, which, by the way, Explorer ships, beautiful. Anyway, it's being redeployed for the 2027-2028 winter season from the Middle East to South America for obvious reasons, just because of all the uh issues going on in the Middle East. New cruises will connect Rio, Buenos Aires, and destinations across Brazil, Uruguay, and Argentina. This is a necessary move, frankly.

And this will be exciting for Explora because there will be 20 new first-time ports for Explora. 12 of those will be in Brazil. So it'll be a significant destination expansion for them. One thing that I like about Explora is they really try and promote more time import. That's one of their main selling points. What Explorer? Explora, yeah, more time import. So they will have five overnight stays. So, like, for instance, an overnight stay in Rio, Buenos Aires are two of the places that they will have late night stays. Plus, there will be eight other ports that they'll have late night departure. So they'll leave at 11 or midnight or something like that, so that you have more time to explore the destination rather than the typical 8 a.m. arrival and 6 p.m. departure.

You and I are plugged into the travel industry, the cruise industry, but there's one thing that drives me crazy about cruises, regardless of the line,

Simplified Packages And Sailing Ships

and it's the dining and drinking packages. And so when I saw this story that Celestial Cruises, which is a cruise ship you'll be on in basically three months, going to Morocco and all the other destinations. Celestial Cruises has moved towards a simpler drink and dining package.

Mark Faldmo 23:02

So rather than having a premium drink package, a soda package, specialty dining package, they're just basically going to like a prepaid credit on your account where you can use it towards that. So it's called Celestial Pay. So you don't have to look through all the different packages and decide what they want. Now I'd recommend adding the money to your account before you go because they give you bonuses. You can reload your account while you're on board. But if you do it before you go, and since they're a European cruise line, this is in Euros. So if you buy a hundred euro credit, they'll give you 15 euros. If you buy 500 euro credit, they'll give you 100 Euros. That's a lot of extra sodas. Ice Cold East. If you buy a thousand euro credit, they give you 250 euro extra credit, which this goes towards the drink and dining packages. So you don't have to figure out all of those confusing drink packages. You just load your card and then you choose what you're gonna buy, and then you choose. One important thing is again, this is only for the drink and beverages. So that credit does not go towards the spa or anything like that. It's only food and drink, but I think it's a great way to do that.

Let's get to the cruise deal of the week. But this is kind of a uh caller question and the cruise deal of the week. This is a text question from Cindy. She says, Hi, Mark and Patrick, this is Cindy. I'd love to take a cruise on a real sailing ship with actual sails, not just a regular small cruise ship. Are there cruise lines that still offer a sail experience? The answer is yes. I think you're probably going to mention star clippers.

Yeah, there are actually three options that I think are really good options if you want a true sailing experience on a larger clipper type sailing ship. So star clippers, it's a classic tall ship experience. They operate traditional style clipper ships, including their largest ship, which is a five-masted royal clipper. And it's still a small ship. That one holds up to 225 people. And then they have two smaller ships that are about 170 people on board. And you would really choose this if you wanted that kind of classic experience. Star Clipper sails in the Mediterranean during the summer and Caribbean and Central America during the winter. The next cruise line is Windstar. Oh, I forgot about Windstar. Yeah, so Windstar is kind of sailing yacht meets upscale cruise. Now, one thing you have to be careful with on Windstar is they have both sail powered and small ship motor-powered ships. So if you want the sailing experience, you have to make sure you're on that sailing experience. Meaning wind power.

They're Mediterranean, Caribbean. And then the destination I really like for this is Tahiti and French Polynesia.

Oh, yeah.

Where they sail. And then the third cruise line is Sea Cloud cruises. This is a luxury sailing experience. It's probably the most upscale compared to the three we've talked about. They're smaller ships. One ship holds 94 passengers, and another one holds 136 passengers. These are genuine tall ships. What I mean by that is all of the sails are hoisted by hand. They have everyone up on the masts and they're hand pulling and hand rigging all of the sails on this ship. So it's almost more of kind of like a classic where they're not using motors to put up the sails, different things like that. It's all done by hand. Similar locations, uh, they sell the Mediterranean in the summer, Caribbean in the winter, but they also have some other interesting itineraries like the Atlantic coast of Europe, Morocco, Canary Islands. They sail to the Azores on certain things. So they have some a little bit more unique itineraries in Europe. These are all real sailing ships, but they all do have engines for if the wind's not blowing or for maneuvering in certain situations. But C Cloud is probably the one that most often tries to sail by wind if it's available.

Star Clippers has a sale they're calling Summer Starts Now. This is for salines in 2027. So this is kind of an early booking offer. That's up to a $300 onboard credit plus prepaid gratuities.

Windstar has a free all-inclusive package, plus they have a reduced deposit promotion. For Tahiti cruises specifically, they also have specials on pre-impost stays, which means they have one pre-night. And then the day you get off the cruise, because the flights don't leave until 11 p.m., they're offering a free day room. Uh so you can go to a hotel for the day and relax before your flight.

Oh, that's a great idea. That's a great promotion that no one ever thinks about.

Yeah, a lot of people don't think about that last day. If your flight's late, what do you do that day? You can do a tour, but then you're usually done by three or four and still have seven hours until your flight. Yeah. You know, so that's good. And then on C Cloud, they have an upgrade special going on. So if you reserve an entry-level cabin, you'll get upgraded to a deluxe cabin. Or if you book a deluxe cabin, you'll be booked and upgraded to a suite cabin.

What do you want to talk about? It airline check-in?

This is an interesting one. There's a story in the news. It is best to check in for your flight right when the check-in window opens, which is usually 24 hours before departure. Don't wait until you get to the airport. And the reasons why some airlines, international airlines, don't let you choose seats until you're checked in. So you'll be able to start choosing seats at that 24-hour window. I didn't even think about that. But the one thing, and this is where it comes in, if your flights oversold, airlines are legally allowed to oversell flights because they have a mathematical number of how many people aren't going to show up for that flight. If bumping someone unvoluntarily becomes necessary, check-in time is one of the criteria they use. Oh usually the last person or persons to check in that will be unvoluntarily bumped.

So when you get that notification on your phone, it's time to check in, do it.

Mark Faldmo 30:25

Do it. Yeah. Interesting. And then also upgrades for frequent flyers that have upgrades. And when you check in, can be a priority to get those upgrades. Online check-in doesn't mean arrive later for your flights. Oh no. You will allow plenty of time to make it through. Two hours for domestic, three hours for international flights. So that online check-in isn't something to ignore, especially in that oversold flight situation. You want to check in as soon as possible.

For all the years that we've been doing this show, I did not know that airlines are legally permitted to oversell flights. I've always had that question. And so basically it just boils down to we expect a certain number of people to fall out or just no show. And so they've got people in place to fill those seats, basically.

Mark Faldmo 31:14

It's amazing. You know, business travelers a lot of times change or don't show, you know, depending on the rules. Now, this experience was 20 years ago when I was learning a new airline system. So I had to go to training for this new system in Dallas, Fort Worth. It was right at the airport there. But I was flying standby. I could see the standby list in the computer system. I was number 60 on the standby list. And I made it with five seats still available on the airplane. You're kidding. So today I don't know what those numbers would be. The revenue management systems are so much more complex than back then. But they were having up to 60 people not show up for a flight. That's crazy back 20 years ago. I'm sure it's much smaller than that now, and they do a better job of that, but they do oversell flights. So, and then especially if their weather delays, things like that, and they're trying to move people on to other flights, some of their high priority frequent flyers get priority over other people to get on those flights. So check in early so you don't have to deal with that.
